About Ashenfelter 8K Classic Organization

Our Mission

The mission of the Glen Ridge Educational Foundation is to produce a first class running event whose proceeds provide supplemental funding of athletics at the high school level.  The 8 kilometer road race is name for Horace Ashenfelter, local hero and winner of the steeple chase event at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. This annual 8K and 1 mile running event has become a  Thanksgiving day tradition in Glen Ridge for family and friends and serious runners alike.

Our Fundraising Goal

This years funds have been earmarked to provide supplementary funding for athletics at every level in the Glen Ridge school system.

Our Organization

The Glen Ridge Educational Foundation is an organization that provides supplemental funding for athletics at the High School level.   This funding is necessary as only five percent of the boroughs' education budget is funded by the State of New Jersey.  With the school population growing, there is a desperate need for sports teams where all athletes can compete. Since the first A8K CLASSIC in 2000, over $50,000 has been donated to the Glen Ridge High School and its' athletic programs.

Our Advisory Board

The Advisory Board is made up of borough residents who produce the event and  oversee fundraising activities and the distribution of funds.

The following Advisory Board members are:

Dan Murphy - D.T. Murphy& Company, Vice Chair - Glen Ridge Historic Preservation Commission
Peter Hughes - CEO, Atlantic Track, Councilman - Glen Ridge Borough

James Ashenfelter, Esq. of the law firm Dickson, Ashenfelter, Slous, of Montclair, NJ.
