16 Years and 499 Races Later, Vince Carnevale Just Won't Quit By PHIL COFFIN, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Open the door and step inside Vince Carnevale's century-old house in Newark. The wall on the left in the hallway is covered from floor to ceiling, from the front door to the kitchen, with photographs, awards and plaques from Carnevale's 70-year career as a runner, many of them from his days at Newark's Central High School and Georgetown University. There is no space left.

On the opposite side, along the stairway upstairs, the wall is covered with more photographs and plaques, dominated by a photo of Carnevale, then in his 70's, running a race in Central Park, snow blowing around him. Follow the photos up the stairs, where they line the wall to the ceiling. At the top of the stairs, the light of a sunny autumn day slips in under an aging blind, landing on another huge photo, this one of Carnevale finishing a marathon, in the year he turned 70, in little more than three and a half hours.

"This is my whole life," Carnevale says, standing on the stairs, raising his palms to point to the walls. Not quite. Sitting outside, making his blue eyes light up, is the blue 2001 Mustang he bought last year. And he will have a role in a 27-year-old friend's wedding next summer.

But there is no separating Carnevale from his running. A trophy case off the kitchen is crammed with his trophies and medals from races, and another case sits in the parlor. Upstairs, past the race T-shirts stacked and hung by the dozens, is a third case, just as full. In another room is a table covered with elaborate bowls for winning races, and a stack of boxes with silver plates that were awards.

These, too, are part of the life of Vince Carnevale, 86, who on Thanksgiving will compete in his 500th race since turning 70.

Carnevale tells visitors that it is not a great accomplishment, "When you love something, that's no problem," he said, but he knows better. He has had a trophy made and engraved commemorating the 500th race, which will come at the Ashenfelter 8K Classic in Glen Ridge, N.J.
