2003 GRHS Harriers Off To a Running Start.

Glen Ridge High School Cross-Country has begun its 2003 season with the largest group of student athletes in years. With 16 students on the roster, it is the first time in over a decade Glen Ridge High School will field full boys and girls squads. "To have a full scoring squad you have to have at least 5 individuals on each." Said new head coach Edward Sanders. "We have 9 boys and 7 girls this season."

Ed Sanders has taken over the reigns from the former coach Sandy Gerbino. "Ed brings with him the experience of two US Olympic Team Trials, certifications in track & field coaching, over a decade of coaching experience along with other accolades" said Sandy Gerbino. "It is extremely gratifying to hand the team over to someone who can take it to the next level. Coach Sanders has already proven himself as a volunteer Assistant Coach of the GRHS Track Program this past Spring."

The "seed" funding for the 2003 cross country team is being provided by "Glen Ridge Athletics" the not-for profit organization which produces the Ashenfelter 8K Classic (A8K Classic). The A8K Classic is the annual 8 kilometer (5 mile) road race held every Thanksgiving morning in Glen Ridge. Proceeds from the race go towards promoting athletics at the high school level. Dan Murphy, the A8K Classic race director was a member of the GRHS Cross Country team back in the 70's and remembers Horace Ashenfelter attending many cross country meets to watch his son, John Ashenfelter compete. Note:( The team won the State Sectional Championship in 1972). Murphy stated "the beauty of the sport (of Cross County) is that every athlete gets to compete, no one sits on the bench".

GRHS Cross Country saw their first informal competition as a squad in the recent Verona 5K this past Labor Day. "The athletes chose to run in the 5K. It was exciting to see them gel as a team," said Sanders. The squad officially starts it season on Saturday, September 13 in Jersey City and will be competing in invitational meets every week. The 2003 Schedule is as follows:
